The amazing thing is that we don’t have to wait around each year for the 4th of July for our own fireworks! Our lives are filled with them – moments of wonder and thrilling explosions of light, color, and emotion.
First - we have to show up for them. We can’t just sit back and expect the fireworks to come to us. We need to seek out ways to bring wonder and awe to our lives. Just like we did when we were children, we need to take ourselves out onto that field and get ready for that show.
But then how might you know when you’re having your own fireworks shows? It may be a moment of breathlessness – a gorgeous view you’ve spotted while on a hike. It could be a deep, visceral sense of peace or happiness, a giddy bubble of joy when you’re perfectly content, in love, or enjoying lunch with friends. The trick is to catch it in the moment, which requires us to be present, mindful and tuned into those moments of joy and excitement. I’ve found that the more I look out for them, the easier they are to recognize. If we focus on the dark, rainy days, then all we learn to see are the dark, rainy days. If we tune the dial in the other direction, then we learn how to find the beautiful moments of awe and wonder. The more we keep our eyes on the sky and look for those fireworks, the easier it becomes to spot them.
Grab your blanket, find your field, and enjoy the show!
